The 2008 Conference committee is so excited to invite you to Colorado
for the annual NAEOP Conference.
The Continental Divide is the “backbone” of a continent.
In North America, from North Alaska to New Mexico, it moves along
the crest of the Rocky Mountains, which separates westward-flowing
streams from eastward-flowing waters. In southwest New Mexico the
divide crosses an area of low relief; it becomes more distinct in
North Mexico, where it follows the Sierra Madre Occidental. In the
United States, it has been called the Great Divide, a name also
occasionally used to designate the whole Rocky Mountain system,
especially the southern section, where the high, rugged ranges presented
an almost impenetrable barrier to westbound explorers and settlers.
Vibrant cultural and recreational opportunities and championship
sports teams are just some of the great characteristics of the Denver
metropolitan area. And, at an altitude of 5,280 feet, Denver’s
proximity to the Rocky Mountains offers visitors an abundance of
recreation options. Conference attendees will find something fun
and exciting for everyone who visits the Mile High City.
Activities in the metro Denver area are available to suit all ages.
Sophisticated high-tech excitement ignites roller coaster fans at
Elitch Gardens. Finned creatures and Sumatran tigers reside at Ocean
Journey, Denver’s aquarium; and the starry night sky provides
the perfect outdoor concert canopy at the world famous Red Rocks
Amphitheatre.
Nighttime entertainment is abundant in Denver’s lower downtown
area, known as LoDo, where many historical buildings have been fully
renovated, transforming the area into a sophisticated and cosmopolitan
neighborhood. Coors Field and the Pepsi Center adjoin the district.
Larimer Square, the heart of LoDo, is complete with dining and upscale,
trendy shopping. Fun nighttime activities can also be found on the
Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, in the Highlands Neighborhood in northwest
Denver, at the Flatiron Crossing Shopping Center in Broomfield,
and at Denver West in Lakewood.
We know you will enjoy your visit to Colorado. Pack your sunscreen
and remember to drink plenty of water.
Dressing for Success…and the Conference
Gayna R. Warren, CEOE
NAEOP Past President
One question that is asked by every first timer is, “what
kind of clothing should I take to the conference?” So, here
are a few tips.
If you are attending the Institute, you will want to be comfortable
as you sit in your classes throughout the day. Nice slacks and blouses
are appropriate.
Business attire (business suits and dresses) is the “dress”
for the day during Advisory Council and business sessions.
In past years, members have worn their “state” outfits
on Thursday for the roll call of states. This year, President Sockwell
has requested that everyone wear their “state” outfits
during the opening session and flag ceremony on Tuesday evening.
So, get together with your state reps and come up with something
that will “show off your state pride!” Regular business
attire will be worn on Thursday.
In her President’s Message, Linda Sockwell mentioned that
the Awards Luncheon would be held on Wednesday at the outdoor venue
on the hotel property. This is a beautiful, covered facility. As
a Colorado native, I would like to tell you that the weather would
be fabulous and not too hot or too cold. But, you never know in
Colorado. So, Linda’s suggestion of a sundress is most appropriate—but
you might want a lightweight jacket—just in case. And, you
might need that lightweight jacket for Colorado’s evenings,
which can be cool. And, of course, hotel meeting rooms are notoriously
cold, so you will want to layer.
The PSP and Installation Banquets are our opportunity to put on
“our Sunday best.” Appropriate dress for these two occasions
is generally “After Five” dress. PSP recipients often
wear floor length gowns, but not required. It’s always fun
to see everyone dressed up and having a great time.
Remember, this is a professional conference. So, dress should be
professional and the type of clothing you normally wear to work.
Dressing professionally shows your confidence and pride, not only
in yourself but also in your position as an educational office professional.
