  • How to most effectively respond to each behavior to prevent the situation from escalating.
  • How to use verbal and nonverbal techniques to defuse hostile behavior and resolve a crisis before it becomes violent.
  • How to cope with your own fear and anxiety.

Question: Who is attending college and what are their needs in the 21st century? Community colleges in the United States enroll over 2.5 million adult students, defined as those age 25 and older, according to the American Association of Community Colleges. In 1997, nearly one-third of community college students were age 30 or older; 46 percent were age 25 or older (Phillippe, 2000). Attracting the enrollment of non-traditional students is only the first step in helping them achieve their educational goals. This workshop will address the characteristics and multicultural needs of non-traditional students including cultural, gender, learning aptitude, and socio-economic differences. We will discuss widely accepted principles of good practice when working with non-traditional students as well as needs of the traditional student, a generation Y perspective.
